In 1996, we went to Rueda to make a good white wine. The hills with stony, limestone soil and the native Verdejo variety of this area were very attractive.
In those years, it was a challenge to talk about a great Spanish white wine, and we were motivated to showcase this side of our land.
Since we had no choice but to succeed, we made an easy wine, even giving in to the temptation of working with the Sauvignon variety so that English-speaking markets would understand our wine. Basa sold all over the world.
We have experienced firsthand the development of this area, its commercial success, and the dangers of that success. We are always grateful to Basa for what it has given us. Now, for a few years now, we have been trying to return to a more sober, more original Rueda. We focus on native varieties, moving away from the commercial. We've been producing a great Rueda wine, El Transistor, for 10 years, which seeks to reveal the authentic character of the best Rueda Verdejo. This work is perhaps our greatest commitment to this region of Castile.

"The very young white 2023 Basa was produced with a blend of Verdejo with 10% Viura from a warm and precocious year. The must fermented and matured in stainless steel. The warm year delivered aromas of ripe yellow fruit and herbs, pollen, spices and a smoky twist and a medium-bodied palate with good ripeness and freshness (pH 3.35) and slightly higher alcohol (13.5%), rounder, like 2022. They got some rain at the end of the cycle that kind of saved the year. This was bottled without malolactic and is tasty and balanced."
