Laurent is best known for his Marsannay wines, but you can blame dodgy government policy for this jewel falling into the Fournier family.
Back in the 1960s, the government forced the land-owners of Marsannay to sell land so that they could build housing.
Lots of Marsannay families ended up buying vineyards in Gevrey Chambertin with the proceeds, and Laurent’s grandfather was no different. This is how Gevrey came into Laurent’s family.
Gevrey Chambertin is home to the most powerful and structured Pinot Noir in Burgundy.
It’s located right in the north of the Côte de Nuits, along the Route des Grand Crus between Fixin and Vougeot.
Local legend has it that vineyards south of this famous road are the lesser of those surrounding the Grand Cru plots to the north.
But Laurent reckons you get a more elegant and finer style of wine from this part of Gevrey - no harm when the region is famed for such big Pinots in the first place.
The vineyard has been farmed organically since 2008, and the 35 year-old vines produce a low enough yield, giving the grapes extra concentration.
It’s aged for 18 months in a mixture of new and old French oak, and the resulting wine is a stunning example of Gevrey Chambertin, at a great price.
